Bengal SapersSince it's raising the BEG and Center popularity known as the Bengal Sappers participated in the all the military operation:

Earning 80 battle honors, 11 theatre honors, 11 Victoria Cross, 116 Indian Orders of Merit,17 Shaurya Chakras, 93 Sena Medals and 11 Arjun Awards, the highest number of won by any single organization in the country.

 

 
 

Bengal Sappers have also the unique distinction of being the only Army group affiliated with both the Navy and the Air Force. The achievements of the Bengal Sappers during times of peace are no less renowned then those during wars. It won laurels by constructing the upper Ganga Canal, the life line of agriculture in Haridwar district of Uttarakhand and western and central UP, building roads and bridged at high altitude and under taking the management of the national calamities and disasters in different parts of the country.

 

 
 

The bi-centaury celebration - The bi-centaury celebration of the Bengal Engineering  Group (BEG) and Center, Roorkee, held from November 5-7 brought to life it's 200 years old saga of valour and sacrifices. The BEG and Centre ,Roorkee, which passed through a chequered carrier, had it's geneses in the pioneers raised by Captain Wood in November 1803 at Kanpur. 

The entire cantonment  area wore a festive look befitting the historic occasion of its bi-century celebration. A very large number serving and retired Bengal Sappers of all ranks both from the country and abroad, congratulated at Roorkee to attend the celebration.

The event got a nostalgic touch as the dozens of retired British Officers mixed with the new generation of Bengal Sappers, Sharing with them the great and wonderful experience of their days here. 

The celebration include a bi-centaury show, the high-tech laser show depicting the BEG legend of service and heroism and the various ways it has serve the nation and laying of whether at the war memorials to pay respects to the martyrs who had laid down their lives for the sake of the motherland.

The other highlights of the occasions were the honoring of the war windows and the outstanding Bengal Sappers, the release of a commemorative stamp, and army band concern and display of motor cycle and equestrian skills. However the culminating point of the programme was an aerobatics (Surya Kiran) show by the six aircrafts display team. 

The aircraft emitting the colored trials formed into different shapes with a marvelous and breath taking alacrity.    

The three days event was attended by all the three service chief. The Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal S.Krishnaswami,the chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Madhvendra Singh and the chief of Armed Forces, General N.C. Vij took the guard of honor in colorful ceremonial parades.

 
  THE WAR MEMORIAL  
 

War Memorial in BEG RoorkeeThis WAR MEMORIAL at Bengal Sappers Roorkee is a replica of Mahmood's tower outside the fort of Ghuzni in Afghanistan, where Sub Devee Singh and 12 other rank of Bangal Sappers stormed this fort for which they were awarded IOM class III in 1839.  The memorial was built in two stages.  The foundation stone for this memorial was initially laid by lord Kitchener when he was C-in-C in 1907.  

 
 

The unveiling of the War Memorial was done later on 26 Feb 1927 by Field Marshal Sir William Birdwood.  The surrounding colonnades with domes were also completed during 1927 in memory of war heroes of first World War.  In 1927 a black platform and grenade were added in the colonnade.

The War Memorial, apart from being a rare monument of architectural value is a reminiscence of the numerous sacrifices made by the Bengal Sappers on the altar of the nation.   Besides cherishing the historical lineage of Bengal Sappers,  it also has immense sentimental and emotional value enshrined in it and is held in the highest esteem by all.
